Working with HEPCA to conserve our beloved Red Sea

Emperor Divers was founded in 1992 and since then we have served up wonderful holidays and diving experiences to thousands of guests.

For almost all that time we have also been actively involved in conservation work in Egypt – the country in which it all began for us.

We were in at the start when HEPCA (Hurghada Environmental Protection & Conservation Association) was created with the intention of safeguarding the Red Sea’s natural environment.

From beginnings that saw 50 buoys installed to help save coral reefs from damage by anchoring, HEPCA has grown into a prominent non-governmental organisation which is a vital force for conservation in the region. And we are delighted to say we still remain involved some 30-plus years later as our Egypt CEO Luke Atkinson sits on the executive board.

The work of HEPCA, and our involvement in it, continues to make us very proud.

Examples of its achievements from the last three decades or so include over 1,000 moorings now in place and the active management of marine protected areas, such as Samadai (Dolphin House), which ensure sustainable tourism practices are maintained to preserve critical habitats.

HEPCA is also a leader in waste management solutions along the Red Sea coast. It has implemented comprehensive waste collection and recycling systems, significantly reducing plastic pollution in coastal and marine environments. Public awareness campaigns further highlight the dangers of plastic waste, encouraging sustainable behaviour among residents and visitors.

It is not just the water that gets HEPCA’s attention, though, as there are also on-land projects for the protection of mangroves, desert landscapes, and wildlife habitats as well as education and community engagement programs to promote action at all levels.

HEPCA really is now a very important environmental advocate, challenging and advising those who make decisions and inspiring involvement and action.

We’re delighted to still be involved with, and giving our support to, this fantastic organisation.
