March 20th – also known as the International Day of Happiness. And where – or more to the point doing what – would make you happy right now?
Well, as you’re on the Emperor Divers website reading this post, there is every chance the answer to that question is: several metres under water taking in the amazing surroundings and exploring the sub-aqua world.
And that’s no surprise. Scuba diving is widely recognised as one of the best activities available for enhancing happiness and overall wellbeing. This is due to a unique combination of physical, mental, and emotional benefits.
One of the key reasons scuba diving promotes happiness is its ability to reduce stress.
That feeling of being submerged in water – weightless, peaceful and disconnected from everyday pressures. The rhythmic breathing required is similar to meditation, helping to calm the mind and reduce anxiety.
Indeed, studies have shown that water immersion lowers cortisol levels, the stress hormone, leading to a greater sense of relaxation and contentment.
Diving also encourages mindfulness. You have to focus on your surroundings, breathing, and movements, leaving little room for distractions or negative thoughts. This heightened awareness brings a connection with the present moment, something known to improve mental wellbeing.
And then, of course, there is the simple joy provided by the underwater world around you – the vibrant marine life, the stunning coral reefs, the beautiful shafts of light… – which only the hardest of hearts could not be uplifted at seeing.
Then there are the physical benefits of diving. It provides a full-body workout, improving cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility which are all linked to the release of endorphins, a natural mood booster.
So, we’re cut off from all land-based issues, living in the moment, mesmerised by the beautiful sights around us while being naturally fed hormones that tell our brains that everything is just great!
Yes, all is well with the world.
But then what about when we come back up and re-surface? Well, then we have the pleasure of another giver of happiness – social connection.
As we divers explore in groups, the sense of community and shared adventure is huge – and another well-known factor in enhancing emotional wellbeing.
That is why every day is Happiness Day when we’re diving.
