10 things to consider before your first liveaboard diving holiday

A liveaboard holiday is the perfect experience for many divers. It’s a chance to live the Eat | Sleep | Dive | Repeat lifestyle – but with so much more besides.

It’s an immersive adventure that transcends typical diving excursions. If you’re planning your first liveaboard trip, here a few you tips regarding what to expect, consider and prepare for. That’s aside, of course, from having the time of your life!

The dull stuff

No, not the trip itself – that will be amazing. This is before you even leave.

Make sure your diving certifications are up to date and match the requirements of the trip you are on such as a certain number of logged dives.

Make sure you’re fit to dive – including getting medical clearance if you have existing health issues. Multiple dives per day over consecutive days can be physically taxing and you want to be in strong enough shape to enjoy every moment.

Make sure you have suitable insurance to cover the specific destination, diving and trip you are going on. You might already have extensive enough cover but there are plenty of companies out there offering the right insurance if you haven’t.

Pack smart

Now it’s starting to get more exciting! But don’t get carried away just yet.

Packing for a liveaboard is different from a regular holiday. Space can be often limited, so it’s essential to pack smart. Prioritise your dive gear, comfortable clothing, medication, and any personal items you can’t do without.

Remember, once the boat sets sail, there’s no popping to the shop to pick up something you’ve forgotten!

Getting introduced..

You’re here! Welcome on board. Your first day on a liveaboard is often about acclimatisation. You’ll be introduced to your cabin and the communal spaces on a tour of the boat and receive safety briefings. These will cover boat safety, diving operations, and emergency procedures so it’s crucial to pay close attention.

Dive, dive and dive again!

The core of a liveaboard holiday is, of course, diving. You’ll have the opportunity to explore different spots from the daily divers, including those that are not accessible on regular dive tours. Be prepared for multiple dives a day – often including night dives – which means you’ll be following a routine: eat, sleep, dive, repeat.

The on-board atmosphere

Liveaboard trips create a sense of community. You’ll be with a group of like-minded individuals who share your passion for diving. This environment fosters camaraderie, and it’s not uncommon to form lasting friendships. Sharing stories and experiences with fellow divers – including our wonderful crews – adds a rich social dimension to your holiday.

A chance to improve

For those looking to enhance their diving skills, a liveaboard holiday is an excellent opportunity. Being in the water so frequently allows you to practice and refine your techniques. Our liveaboards also offer courses, so you could come back with advanced certifications.

Unplug and enjoy the serenity

All our liveaboards offer WiFi – but that doesn’t mean you have to use it. Being on a liveaboard can be a great chance for guests to disconnect and escape from the ‘real world’. Enjoy the serenity of being at sea, the stunning sunsets, and the peacefulness that comes with being away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Be flexible

No, not like that – we don’t implement compulsory morning exercises!

Flexibility is key on a liveaboard. Weather conditions and marine life sightings can change plans quickly. Divers who are adaptable often enjoy their trip more as they embrace the unpredictability of the sea.

A chance to learn

Our crews are made up of vastly experienced professionals who, obviously, have a passion for diving. They are there to ensure your safety but will also be delighted to pass on all their know-how. If you need help or advice – ask. If you want to find out more about the country, the marine life, the dive sites – ask. And if you don’t ask, they might just tell you anyway!

Have fun: Enjoy the unique experience that a liveaboard diving holiday provides. It’s an opportunity to dive some of the best spots, often away from the crowded day-trip sites, and to forge new friendships with like-minded enthusiasts.
